At a time when new post-pandemic needs can lead to changes in working or living spaces, Superstudio offers offices, showrooms, fixed or temporary rental accomodation in its "communities".
There is no doubt that these months that have shocked the world will have long-term consequences on lifestyles. Smart-working, social distances, new mobility now require a different approach and perhaps a radical change. The city will have to respond quickly to those who have realized that they need different, larger, smaller, closer, more distant homes, offices, showrooms, more accessible with their favorite means of transport. Bikes and kick scooters will have dedicated lanes and will be the preferred alternative of many compared to bus and metro. All situations that sometimes force us to rethink the places of life and work...
The unmissable events that Ventura Projects realized in Milan during the Design Week will no longer be there. The Dutch studio that had discovered decentralized places such as Lambrate and the surroundings of the Central station with Nordic and avant-garde design closes.
The news arrived like lightning in a clear sky, on Friday 15th May, and left the world of Milan's design and Fuorisalone stunned. First excellent victim of the post-coronavirus, Margriet Vollenberg announced the closure of her temporary design project Ventura Projects which had brought a breath of news, of unexpected events, of discovery during the Milan Design Week. First to open to the public of architects and young creatives the transformation area of Lambrate and then brave to recover the Magazzini Recordati near the Central Station for design, thus drawing the attention of the Municipality and the Railways to the possibilities of those structures to be time abandoned.
The first woman to enhance Polish design outside the borders of her Poland, her mentor was Alessandro Mendini with whom she has worked and collaborated for a long time. To the work of designer, sculptress, art-director she alternates the curatorship of exhibitions, such as those dedicated to his master in Poznam in 2004 on the occasion of the entry of Poland into the European Community and in 2014 in Wroclaw in the year in which it was the Capital of European Culture. At Superstudio she arrived in 2011 and many more times.
Dorota between Poland and Italy, how did this happen?
My studio has been located on the Alzaia del Naviglio Grande in Milan for years, but I arrived in the city over twenty years ago for an internship in the Mendini Atelier. I studied in Poland, at the University of Art in Poznań, Faculty of Design and Interior Architecture with a thesis on Biodesign. I won three awards for the best degree and so I had the opportunity to go abroad to deepen my studies. I chose Italy, for its cultural wealth, its ancient history, the beauty of its landscape of its traditions and its people. I traveled around Italy and landed in Rome, for me the most beautiful city in the world with its squares, fountains, gardens, with the wings of angels in the paintings and sculptures of Ponte dell'Angelo...
Never as in this uncertain Phase2 the desire to go out, to be outdoors, to enjoy the fresh air and the sun become domineering. It is not just an emotional desire, but the urge to rethink our daily lives in different spaces, open and in symbiosis with nature, where you can also study, work, play sports ...
Research in recent years confirms that we are an "indoor generation", which spends 90% of its time in enclosed spaces, over 20 hours a day. And we do it unconsciously, because our perception is often different. Even so, very often, we live in sealed spaces, badly lit and poorly ventilated, harmful to our health.
Often forced to live "inside" - and the health emergency has highlighted all the limits of the places we live in - we have an increasing desire to "stay outside", in contact with nature and immersed in it.
Hybrid events, digital events, new attitudes for meeting management. These are the themes that agencies, locations, planners, creative people of the world of events deal with newfound enthusiasm. And that can renew live communication. Superstudio is already ready with its GoLive project.
The need for sociality is inherent in human beings, the importance of meeting, participating in aggregative events, getting to know each other, confronting each other is essential. The direction in which Superstudio is moving is to satisfy these needs not only by ensuring the adoption of appropriate hygiene-health measures but also by exploring new scenarios based on the use of web and digital technologies. Thus was born the GoLive project which offers in the spaces of Superstudio Più a TV-set ready to use, professional and adaptable to the most varied needs.
The set up of the space includes a 24x3 m stage, a large 24x5,5 m led screen with a 2.6 mm pitch and a control station. The capacity is about 300 people (with a minimum guaranteed safety distance of 1 m). The professional audio/lighting system is managed by the production department and can be adapted to various scenarios: talk shows, fashion shows, show cooking, conferences, product launches, press conferences, live streaming, webcasting, TV commercials...
The new challenges of doing business, the remodeling of work and its environments, the rethinking of public spaces, commerce and culture are just some of the many topics covered during the webinar, which proved to be a valuable opportunity for reflection on future prospects .
For those who were unable to attend the live broadcast “Will it be a new Renaissance? This is how Italy of design starts again "with Gisella Borioli, Giulio Cappellini and Aldo Cibic, here is the full video of the event (in Italian).
Eco Social Designer, as he defines himself, has the special ability to bring beauty even from industrial waste. A highly topical issue in times of sustainability and circular economy. His first exhibition was at Superstudio 13, in 2012. Seats talking about a different way of thinking about the waste of our civilization.
Tell me about your choice to become an eco-social designer or a "waste designer" ahead of time.
It was 2008 and I was working as a permanent designer for a packaging company, but, after 5 years, I felt that the company reality was too tight and I needed to "speak with my voice". I was already very fascinated and intrigued by the plastic and glassy waste that resulted in the production process and I remember that I collected them to study and reinterpret them. Soon I realized that, in addition to making works with the waste materials that I found, I could draw on much more material by helping companies to recycle. Each of my creations gradually became a hand in ecology, to which I quickly joined the active participation of social associations...
In the postcovid-19 world nothing will be as before, it's said. And certainly myths and values that have so far been overwhelmed by ephemeral and often inconsistent characters and trends that occupy the covers of magazines and the pages of newspapers will return to the surface. A revolution that has just begun.
We need competence, commitment, quality against appearance, superficiality, improvisation, the supposed talents from Talents Show. We need people who know how to take responsibility for bringing the world to a saving, better horizon. Of new heroes that cloud false myths. To better know and appreciate doctors, scientists, researchers, engineers, anthropologists, chemists, physicists, architects, urban planners, computer scientists, artists who can take us out of the ford and give us back security...
Preparations are underway for the spaces of Superstudio to host virtual or virtualised events. This will in fact be the future of conventions, presentations and fashion shows to widen the online audience in the face of a reduction in physical attendance in the locations. Or to make the real event even more wow thanks to the support technology with increasingly performing Led screens. Like those of Wave&Co.
In these weeks of suspension of events, Superstudio has continued to make its spaces available for video and shooting.
Among the latest productions hosted, that of Wave&Co, an Italian sales, rental, installation and content creation company for ledwall, has brought to our spaces one of the latest innovations in the world of electroluminescence. Technology, undisputed protagonist of the new habits of these days, is experiencing a strong acceleration and even the world of LED screens for indoor and outdoor solutions is making progress. The new product presented by Wave&Co, against the background of the halls of Superstudio, is the new series of modular LED screens for indoor solutions...
It is difficult to imagine today the events that until yesterday brought together a large number of people in a lively and vibrant atmosphere also made up of exchange, greetings, hugs, sharing, common experiences, whether for business for information or for pleasure. Events and fairs will have to change. Integration between real and virtual will become mandatory. And trust.
The new password is "social distancing". But what we should aim for is physical distancing combined with social proximity. It is, this, a fundamental node above all for activities of not first necessity. Those, that is, to which people decide to take part in pursuing a personal pleasure, a desire for belonging and participation. Obviously digital supports us in part. But we must develop "real-virtual" hybrid proposals that allow us to physically return to the non-functional but useful and necessary spaces to feel good. Those of culture, commerce and also trade fairs, which are made of desire to see, touch, understand, share...
