FRIDA KAHLO, THE WOMAN BEHIND THE MYTH

Posted by: Chiara Ferella Falda

A precious selection of rare and iconic photographs reveals Frida Kahlo through the eyes of those who knew, loved and photographed her, between intimacy, self-representation and images that have become legendary. A story that goes beyond folklore to come closer to the woman, the artist and the complexity of the figure.

As overused as the term may be today, there is no doubt that Frida Kahlo is a contemporary icon. Her face, with her magnetic gaze and distinctive eyebrows, is now as familiar as those of Marilyn Monroe or Che Guevara.

Yet, unlike other figures who have entered the collective imagination through a work or a single gesture, Frida made herself, her life and her image her most powerful work. An original photography exhibition, produced by Navigare Mostre, explores this process of transformation, revealing the woman behind the myth and the myth within the woman.
The exhibition “Through My Eyes: Frida Kahlo and the Making of the Myth”, curated by Vittoria Mainoldi and on view at MyOwnGallery at Superstudio Più from 8 October to 11 January, explores precisely this transformation. Not through her paintings, but through an extraordinary collection of photographs taken by some of the great masters of the 20th century: Edward Weston, Nickolas Muray, Imogen Cunningham, Lucienne Bloch, Toni Frissell, Julien Levy, Lola Álvarez Bravo, Bernard Silberstein, Gisèle Freund, Fritz Henle and Emmy Lou Packard. Photographs that do more than portray her face or body marked by suffering: they reveal the strength of a rebellious spirit, capable of transforming pain into art and intertwining her identity with the roots of Mexican culture.
The exhibition is not a biographical journey told through photographs. Rather, it is a dialogue between the artist and her photographic representation, a play of gazes that reveals passions, fragilities and contradictions. There is the intimate gaze of her lover Nickolas Muray, the affectionate eye of her friend Lucienne Bloch, the iconographic approach of Bernard Silberstein, and the celebrated portraits by Gisèle Freund, who captured her in everyday life with Diego Rivera.
