This year's Design Week ended with a general feeling of satisfaction and Milan took back on its renew role as the design capital of today and tomorrow. Here's where the mind is already thinking about the next edition, with less than a year to go. Nine months is the right time to issue another appointment with a thousand voices imagining a new world. And a number of things can be already gleaned from the "numbers" of the just finished edition...

A resurgent Milan Design Week 2022 concluded with a bang, probably exceeding expectations given all the difficulties that pandemic, war and impossible journeys caused preventing a part of the world from travelling to the city. Milan is, as always, the undisputed capital of international design, with over 800 events. While the general numbers, those stated by Rho Fiera Salone, are only half of the miraculous year of 2019, so are the city events, communicated based on abstract restrictions.

"Someone is Lying”, a perfect title for the project by Alcantara, a leading company in the industry and certified Carbon Neutral since 2009, to raise awareness among a cross-section of the public about the importance of engagement based on science and facts and not on the misleading communications circulating on the sustainability front...

Trees located at the entrance of the Superdesign Show mark the sections in which the “Looking Ahead” project is divided. Six stylized blue trees designed by Giulio Cappellini and treated by Sonja Quarone as "ad artem" stand out as unique pieces that signal and invite visitors to enter the show without getting lost along the rich path of this edition. Resin provided by Gobbetto is applied to the wood, which creates a surface with a multitude of shades and reliefs.

What about dedicating the garden, courtyard or terrace the same care as home or workplace?...

In the huge art garden by the entrance to Superstudio, amid the sculptures by Flavio Lucchini, the installation in the green displays the latest features in outdoor furniture, including the garden accessories by Paolelli Garden, the pieces by Piero Lissoni and Patricia Urquiola for Janus et Cie and the stone pavements by Nero Sicilia. A biophilic multifunctional and modular veranda by Massimiliano Mandarini with Gaviota Pergole Bioclimatiche illustrates the vision of a future that is friendly to nature by exploring new ideas regarding indoor and outdoor environments. This project is the result of a research related to the 2030...

Looking Ahead: this was the general theme conceived, months back, to indicate the direction of the next edition of Superstudio’s Superdesign Show during Design Week 2022. As if to distance us from the convictions of many: “Everything will return as before” and predicting that the future will actually be reformulated in all of its expressions, we’ve invited interesting designers and companies to attend our event and align with our glimpsing “beyond”. To be able to explore unknown territory, to anticipate needs and trends, translate the word “sustainability” – the common term connecting everything – into concrete proposals, and redesign our lives which have become unexpectedly more complicated... 

The occasion of Design Week 2022, assigned by the pandemic to this year’s anomalous date, rendered even more uncertain by the war in Ukraine, makes the date with design a moment of optimism which aims to repair the social, commercial and productive fabric in a positive manner. The latest edition of Superdesign confirms the creative direction of Gisella Borioli and the art direction of Giulio Cappellini, who have made the Superdesign Show prestigious and unmissable ever since the first edition in 2000, and all of its iterations in the years following...
