Superstudio Design, a 3x3 Project

Posted by: Ginevra Urso

Yesterday morning, in the Conference Hall of Palazzo Reale in Milan, the elite of the creative world gathered to discover the plans for Superstudio Design 2026, a key event of Design Week. Among the approximately 350 guests crowding the room, from journalists to artists, the atmosphere was not the usual institutional one, but rather that typical energy of the Fuorisalone.

During the conference, it immediately emerged how art would hold a special place within the project, with artworks and design objects exhibited side by side and in dialogue with one another.

During the conference, it immediately emerged how art would hold a special place within the project, with artworks and design objects exhibited side by side and in dialogue with one another. Along these lines, the opening remarks were made by Tommaso Sacchi, Milan's Councilor for Culture, who defined Superstudio as a concrete example of how industrial spaces can reinvent themselves and become the cultural soul of the city. A vision that Gisella Borioli, founder of the project, forcefully reaffirmed by announcing the passing of the torch to the new team: she will remain the strategic guide, while leaving room for "new operations" to ferry this legacy into the future.
A future that this year, during Design Week, does not stop at a single location but, as illustrated by architect Laura Vella, triples its presence across the territory with three venues: Superstudio Più, Superstudio Maxi, and Superstudio Village. Tommaso Borioli, CEO of Superstudio, shared the fears and challenges of such a vast project. A risky bet but, all things considered, a winning one, given that at the end of the conference he admitted with satisfaction that the result far exceeded his own expectations: 68 projects, 88 brands involved, 85 designers, and as many as 19 nations represented—an international mosaic that promises to amaze in all three venues.
The project brings together architecture, art, and design to tell the story not only of manufacturing but also of Italian culture, which remains one of the main assets in the world, as explained by architect Giulio Cappellini, art director of the Supercity project. Marcel Wanders (creative director of Moooi) enchanted the audience by promising a multisensory experience capable of going beyond the simple function of objects, while Fabio Guida, co-director of Turin's Graphic Days, highlighted the ambitious goal that has always guided the festival: building social design projects capable of truly engaging people.
The morning ended beautifully on a breathtaking terrace directly overlooking the spires of the Duomo. Between a glass of bubbles and finger food, a precise feeling circulated among the guests, summarized by a comment overheard in the crowd: "This press conference makes us go home with much more curiosity than we had when we walked in."
