“INTERIM MEASURE” ON THE FLOORSTAGE

Posted by: Fulvia Ramogida

During the pandemic, when the world of art and performance had its vent almost exclusively in digital, acute artist Anna Scalfi Eghenter, grasped the moment of suspension creating "Interim Measure": an extremely active and physical work at the Teatro Sociale in Trento.

Anna Scalfi Eghenter’s works weave art, performance, social themes in a carefully designed warp. It is necessary to have great experience, a universal and at the same time peculiar vision, a good spirit of self-denial and clear ideas to produce works such as "Surrendering army", a series of 3D printed soldiers, posing for surrender and presented in 2015, long before the Black Live Matters made the US police American knelt or Gaptransfer, an artistic and participatory project that turns the gender pay gap into a discount for women.
Theatres were closed for over a year. Those who bought tickets months and months ago, look with hope at the news, to discover when they will be allowed to return amongst stages and seats. These temporary restrictions have a weight on the lives of fans, on the ones who were approaching the magic world of theatre, on a whole category of workers. The sensation of going haywire is even stronger when we think of the activities that have not stopped, in an aporia between licit and illicit, necessary and superfluous.
The Trento Cultural Services Center S. Chiara has sent a true signal with "Interim Measure" the installation by Anna Scalfi Eghenter proposing a new "temporary measure" justified by the emergency period. Since the first days of the pandemic, supermarkets have been the place where to satisfy essential needs, the symbol of a possible continuity and, thanks to this art project, the Teatro Sociale in Trento has literally become a supermarket. Stalls have been transformed with the installation of shelves decorated with golden flowers in continuity with the style of the theatre, their shelves have been filled with products that we find at the supermarket: fruit, pasta, drinks, perfectly ordered. Lanes are wide, the entrance is provided with specific health and safety measures to be complied before entering in a limited number.
Interim Measure speaks of the total impossibility of accessing cultural spaces and reactivating the entire cultural sector programming, even when the safety of the event and of the service are completely guaranteed. You cannot open supermarket into a theatre... but just in these days lights are turning on again. Since April 26th  theatres can reopen and, while waiting for the start of the programming, spectators can be an active part of this rebirth. Anna Scalfi Eghenter’s art is a participatory practice, going straight to our heart and brain, an example of rigorous and hopeful design.
