THE TEMPLES OF THE 3 RELIGIONS IN ABU DHABI

Posted by: Mariella Dolci

Not just skyscrapers in the futuristic backdrop of the capital of the Emirates. Amidst the dunes of the pristine Saadiyat Island, the Cultural District houses the museums of great masters of Western architecture and, recently, the Abrahamic Family House as well, more than a stunning architectural structure: it is a work of art symbolizing harmony among diverse cultures and religions coexisting in our global society. This extraordinary example of design not only aesthetically embodies unity but also serves as a tangible bridge between Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. A possible path.

Increasingly fascinating and significant in its dedication to culture and knowledge, Saadiyat Island has long boasted iconic structures such as the Louvre designed by Jean Nouvel, Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum, and Norman Foster's Zayed National Museum. Adding to this exceptional cultural offering is the Abrahamic Family House designed by David Adjaye, which includes three places of worship - a mosque, a church, and a synagogue - all within the same structure. It opened its doors to visitors and worshippers just a year ago, on March 1, 2023.
The architecture of the Abrahamic Family House, inspired by the document signed by the leaders of the three monotheistic religions during the Pope's visit in 2019 and sponsored by Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, is infused with symbolism. Al Nahyan aims to interpret his father's thought through this project: " the world is only a group of families living close to each other." The three distinctive structures, of equal form and size, not only represent a fusion of unique architectural styles but also tell a story of peaceful coexistence. The intricate details and modern lines blend harmoniously, as if engaging in a dialogue.
The monolithic facades, formed by columns and arches, protect the beating heart of faith while creating an imposing barrier against the scorching rays of the sun. The interior spaces, constructed with innovative insulating materials, welcome worshippers while allowing for lower energy consumption and environmental impact. In addition to its intrinsic beauty, the Abrahamic Family House leverages the latest technological innovations to create an unprecedented spiritual experience. From cutting-edge structures to interactive installations, the design intelligently integrates with technology to provide an immersive and educational experience.
The minimalist Mosque, facing Mecca and surrounded by enchanting arabesque windows, instills a sense of peace and contemplation in dialogue with the adjacent Catholic Church. The Christian building, facing east with its stunning play of vertical wooden elements, evokes the idea of ascension while a stylized hanging crucified Christ serves as a reminder of eternal love. Finally, the Synagogue, facing Jerusalem with its tent-like dome, embraces worshippers in the center of a modern tribune. All three buildings are surrounded by a large square, a symbol of coexistence, hospitality, and a willingness to listen, united by a single element: water. This element, an icon of purification and rebirth, also serves as a bridge connecting diverse traditions, emphasizing the concept of sharing spiritual values.
