In the Atelier of the FLA Museum, the exhibition “Skyscrapers” transforms architecture into narrative and metaphor, bringing into dialogue two complementary visions: that of the resident artist Flavio Lucchini and that of the photographer Giangiacomo Rocco di Torrepadula, known as GG.

The starting point is the skyscraper, an absolute icon of modernity. But while Lucchini sees it as a symbol of humanity’s visionary power, GG turns it into an intimate reflection on freedom.

Lucchini looks to the East, to the vertiginous landscapes of the Emirates and especially to Dubai, where futuristic architecture coexists with very ancient traditions. In his digital paintings, skyscrapers multiply, change shape, fragment, becoming almost unreal organisms that tell the story of a world in acceleration. “Science is fast, civilization is slow,” the artist observes, recalling how the modernist dream—that of Le Corbusier and the house as a “machine à habiter”—has transformed into contemporary megalopolises. Towers built on desert sand embody both wonder and unease: they are proof of human ingenuity but also of the tension within cities that seem to have no limits.
If Lucchini looks at the future of metropolises, GG starts from a personal experience. Before becoming an artist, he was for over twenty years an entrepreneur and startupper, living for a long time in the United States. His photographs begin as architectural images, iconic buildings set against deep black skies. Then an intuition changes everything. In one shot, a seagull appears, a visual device that reveals to the artist the meaning of his research. That seagull is himself, someone who left a structured life to pursue freedom, even if solitary and uncertain. Thus the buildings become “Cages,” elegant cages that reflect on the price of beauty and success, when rhythms and social models end up trapping our most inner freedom.
In “Skyscrapers,” skyscrapers therefore become much more than architecture: for Lucchini they are monuments to humanity’s ability to transform the world, for GG they are structures that question our need for escape. Between urban utopia and the desire for freedom, the exhibition builds a visual dialogue that invites us to look at cities—and perhaps also our lives—from a different height.
