MIA FAIR. THE IMAGES OF TODAY

Posted by: Silvia Zanni

The war in Ukraine, the Iranian revolution, the aesthetics of food and buildings, the different implementations of Artificial Intelligence in the fields of creativity… the photographic language and its topicality return to the center of the XII edition of the MIA Fair, the first fair of photography in Italy, the most interesting and trendy, which for the fourth year in a row hosts 100 exhibitors in the spaces of Superstudio Maxi from 23 to 26 March.

The pop collage chosen as the icon image of this edition is Davide Bramante's Milan, an ideal vision with the Cathedral and the facade of the gallery in the background, silhouettes of people, and some advertising slogans, from which the many voices of the city come. The same where MIA Fair was born, an event that is about to return to the spaces of Superstudio Maxi with its beautiful curated sections: let's start with "Reportage Beyond Reportage" curated by Emanuela Mazzolis of Pralafera, a path that drags the viewer into a journey through the stories of life, of war, of migratory flows, of freedom, of hope, of climatic disasters, of sharing, also providing an interesting point of view on reportage today, seen as a story that reads the extraordinary in the ordinary. This is what emerges from “The Extraordinary Daily. Unique and curious visions of contemporary society”, which in the same section collects the works of three reporters: Carlo Bevilacqua on the Irish Travellers, Keila Guilarte with her Cuba in black and white, finally Dario Zucchi and the investigation on the relationship between art and spectator. A project curated by Patrizia Madau «in which» in the words of the curator «the simple beauty of the daily life of peoples and ethnic groups emerges».

Another leading section is "Underskin, Stories from Iran": a selection of works by Iranian artists who represent Iran after the death of Mahsa Amini, the young woman killed in September '22 by the morality police, and the protests she triggered. The images are accompanied by a performance by Zoya Shokoohi, the screening of the short film "Power to the People" by Rahim Milani and the photographic series by Sarah Doraghi on the forbidden face of the country. Saturday 25 March two masterclasses on art in Iran. Among the long-awaited guests is Shirin Neshat, exceptional photographer and director, Silver Lion at the 2009 Venice Film Festival and Golden Lion at the 1999 Art Biennale.

Again, Artificial Intelligence which, after having demonstrated that can and knows how to write detailed and informed articles on almost any topic, is put to the test on the creation of works of art. They told her about Dante's Inferno. The result? “Artificial Hell", a series of figurative reproductions of the first song.

There is no shortage of prizes, flagship of MIA including IRINOX SAVE THE FOOD, which talks about food, eating habits and waste, and the second edition of La Nuova Selezione Italiana, which enhances the work of those artists who are making the evolution of the photographic language.

Lastly, the successful collaboration with the BAG-Bocconi Art Gallery continues, which this year presents the solo exhibition "Arquitectonica" by Gianluca Pollini (Bologna, 1960), a selection of 15 architectural shots in research on Aldo Rossi and the Fascist Ventennio in Italy.
