MAGNIFICA FABBRICA. THE TEATRO ALLA SCALA WORKSHOPS MOVE FROM VIA TORTONA TO VIA RUBATTINO

Posted by: Luisa Espanet

An unstoppable Milan continues its urban transformation towards 2030, recovering and regenerating spaces intended for companies of excellence. This is the case of La Scala workshops, of their wealth of costumes, sets, objects, sculptures born and currently preserved in the spaces of the Ex-Ansaldo (today Base) workshops in via Tortona.

Teatro alla Scala in Milan will have new workshops. Indeed, Magnifica Fabbrica, an international competition for the creation of workshops and storages of the Theatre in the Rubattino area, near Linate airport, has been announced in these days. An important initiative, as the Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala has claimed, for urban regeneration. The area is the Innocenti factory, but the design will also involve the new arrangement and expansion of the nearby Lambretta Park. Thus, the process of transformation of the industrial area of Via Tortona continues: in 2001 the current laboratories of La Scala opened in the former Ansaldo space; this event was preceded by the creation of the Superstudio Più in front of La Scala workshops and followed by the opening of Mudec, Museum of Cultures, next door. The workshops’ project not only improves the efficiency of the theater, but is part of a discourse of sustainability and enhancement of the cultural offer. Apart from the use of construction materials, next to the workshops there will be deposits, once scattered around the city, now bringing time-management benefits as well as ecological ones, given the limited transportation involved. In this new space there will be two test rooms for the choir the same seize as two stages, explaines the Artistic Director of the Teatro alla Scala Dominique Meyer. Everything will be digitalized so that you will be able to find among more than 70 thousand costumes in the archive the one you need to reuse in a show. Moreover, the expansion of the nearby Lambretta Park should also bring the enhancement of the Lambro river, with consequent development of biodiversity’s care and number. This competition, with the procedure published on the telematic platform concorrimi.it, is addressed to both architects and engineers without any limit of age. Concerning the spaces of the current workshops in Via Tortona, they will continue to be used, keeping their function of cultural spaces. That is what Mayor Giuseppe Sala has claimed.
