I FIORI DELLA MATERIA: ELENA SALMISTRARO

Posted by: Gisella Borioli

Eight stories, eight projects, eight womens. “I Fiori della Materia” is the collective exhibition part of “In Women’s Hands” the Superstudio’s programme which combines professional designers attentive to material and their processing. An in-depth study of their research, passion and creative power but also choices, paths and challenges they have faced in life. On show until October 29 to discover female creativity, including unconventional works and unpublished stories.
Focus on Elena Salmistraro

"Among my creations there are some objects which have no practical function but actually, from my point of view, perform the complicated task of nourishing the soul, to excite, to improve our life quality. What is relevant is that object transmits the delicate poetry which inspired him."
Meanwhile Elena looks like this, with intense eyes and a big smile so that you immediately understand she hides a determined and smart person.
She arrived during Design Week at Superstudio in 2012 among young talent and she immediately got noticed. The rest is known history because Elena is already a celebrity.Elena Salmistraro, product designer and artist, born in 1983, lives and works in Milan where in 2009 she set up her studio focusing her research on object’s expressive language. With her highly distinctive stylistic imprint, powerful, unique of its kind, which straddles illustration, design and visual art, she knows how to encourage emotion and sensitivity. Combinations of shapes and volumes, materials and colors blend between tradition and innovation and something unexpected and awesome always comes out. Where attention to detail and shapes harmonic research stand out, between anthropomorphism and primitivism. A graphic symbols excess offers the object a stereoscopic image transporting it to a territory suspended between fantasy and reality. During the years of eclectic design it’s to her that several important companies, including Bosa, Apple, Disney, Alessi, cc-Tapis, Altreforme and many others, turn to have unconventional products. In 2017 she won the "Salone del Mobile Milano Award" as "Best Emerging Designer" and in the same year she was nominated "Ambassador of Italian Design in the World" on the occasion of "Italian Design Day". Her projects have been selected for some of the most important international exhibitions and they can be found at the most important national and international trade fairs. Between one thing and another, she did not forget to settle down and raise a beautiful family, with a husband-partner-colleague beside her and two kids.
