FROM MAGAZINES TO SOCIAL MEDIA: MIRANDA’S LESSON

Posted by: Camilla Golzi Saporiti

Already a cultural phenomenon and viral talking point, the sequel revisits the collapse of a system in which magazines sat at the very top of the cultural hierarchy, shaping everything from fashion trends to the priorities of public debate through closed, highly stratified editorial institutions. It is the world of the original The Devil Wears Prada: the iconic «cerulean blue sweater» worn by a young, awkward Andy Sachs - played by Anne Hathaway - suddenly thrust into a rigid, selective, almost impenetrable publishing ecosystem. Nigel, portrayed by Stanley Tucci, attempts to defend that universe with one final burst of romantic nostalgia: «Runway isn’t just a magazine, it’s a global icon, a winding road that somehow brings us back together». Yet it is precisely this notion of centrality - the magazine as the sole gatekeeper of cultural mediation - that now feels outdated. In the new film, Andy becomes the embodiment of a generational shift: no longer an outsider navigating a vertical system, but the representative of a world in which storytelling is inherently horizontal, created collectively and filtered by no single authority. The old editorial model, built on fortress-like newsrooms and elite advertising, gives way to a nonstop ecosystem of social media, creator economies, and AI-driven communication. The transformation is not merely technological; it is profoundly cultural. Authority is decentralized, news emerges through simultaneous streams, and journalism evolves into a hybrid space where information and entertainment increasingly overlap, with few clear boundaries left between them. It is within this landscape that the Digital Journalism Fest 2026 takes shape on June 13 at Superstudio Più. More than an event, it is a lens on the present: creators, journalists, podcasters, and YouTubers coming together to explore how stories are told when the rules are no longer written by a select few, but negotiated collectively. For one day, Milan becomes a newsroom without walls, a place where content is not merely produced, but rewritten in real time. Following a first edition that drew more than 750 participants, the festival returns with an ambitious lineup of talks, activations, and networking opportunities, shifting the focus from “what is being told” to “how narratives are built!: from Miranda to Andy, from the immaculate order of a system that once imposed control from above to a fluid, unstable stream in which chaos is no longer contained, but navigated, and narrated as it unfolds.
