Every year installations by Lexus during the Fuorisalone tell emotional visual stories with the contribution of top names of architecture and design. The car exists and doesn’t, revealing itself by means of symbols and representations of movement and of fluidity close to contemporary arts. The last performance, a show of dance, lights and technology, curated by studio Rhizomatiks, at Superstudio during the last Design Week, provided a unique and unforgettable experience.
In the past thirty years, the automotive world has undergone a sensational transformation, making the creative element that was hidden behind the project part visible: industrial processes, social changes, new driving systems, a vision of motorized vehicle not as a symbol status anymore, still testimony of lifestyle but first of all an “aware object”. Design not as an aesthetic symbol element anymore but as research mainstay. Lexus has definitely been protagonist in this automotive changing process bringing in the sector not only technological and style innovation, but most of all reflecting on parallel themes that are connected to automotive in an apparently indirect way: thanks to this motivation, researches have generated new philosophies and currents of thought, according to “the process of thinking will inspire the form” concept (Toyo Ito for Lexus). With a completely Japanese approach, that made and will make the Land of the Rising Sun forever trendy classic, contemporary and futuristic at the same time, Lexus right from the beginning has meticulously explored both details and macro themes of design not only as element of industrial process, but rather as a flow of ideas, technologies, suggestions, subjective and social experiences, a flow that goes from a starting point and runs without interruptions towards the future. “The flow of time in a timeless environment”, Sou Fujimoto for Lexus, 2009. Like a perfectly multifaceted diamond - inspiration element of Elastic Diamond installation by Nendo in 2008 -, icon of simplicity and purity but also of value and structure, the research by Lexus responds with a minimalist synthesis to complex stimuli, originates from an in-depth review of elements, of needs, searching no innovation for itself but always develops an anthropocentric research.
In this continuous process, Lexus has got regular clients of Fuorisalone of Milan used to extremely sophisticated installations, collaborating with International renowned designers: from Tokujin Yoshioka to Fabio Novembre, from Toyo Ito to Nendo up to the magnificent “Leading With Light” installation created for the brand by Rhizomatiks at Superdesign Show 2019 of Superstudio (watch the VIDEO). A research where the object-automotive is a concept on the background, concealed, it cannot be seen but it is suggested by movement and technology; at the centre, the human being and his emotions, the light – element often seen in the Lexus-thought and forever protagonist of mankind development -, fluidity, emotions, feelings up to contemporary art and interactive performance between a dancer and the drones that dance together like a catalyst and expression of human experiences that blend with technology.
The Lexus dualistic research has been made visible by the presence, during the installations for the Fuorisalone since 2013, of Lexus Design Award, a research platform of solutions to create a better world where young designers have the opportunity to work side by side with top names and mentors of excellence, exhibiting their best work during the Milanese design week. Lisa Marks won the last edition, in 2019, with the Algorithmic Lace bra, designed following an old technique yet by means of 3D to provide new solutions to women who had undergone mastectomy. Design for a better world.
