CULT&MUST 2000/2020. THE NEW MILLENNIUM ICONS

Posted by: Luisa Espanet

Furniture, accessories, beautiful "things": proposals of several types that at the beginning of the century have captured the attention of market and experts and could enter the icons group that represent an era, the first twenty years of the third millennium. Too early to enter design museums that historicize the symbols of time. So let's try to, with the guidance of an expert and talent-scout like Giulio Cappellini. Perhaps a personal choice, as befits an authoritative curator who launched many young designers who later became "great".

We enter this theater of excellence with companies that honor us for their refined design and quality. Starting with Lamborghini and Its iconic dream car and the Chromophone installation, a large wheel that once set in motion produces a concert of colors, textures and sounds, emphasizing the infinite languages of Alcantara. Company among the major Italian excellences, on show it pays homage to the Bel Paese and one of its icons: the Alcantara-covered polka dot Vespa by Paola Navone. Alfredo Bikes, named after the great champion Binda, with frame in wood, entirely handmade on Lake Maggiore. Passing through objects for years in Design’s Olympus like those for home by Alessi: from Piana, the stackable chair in fiberglass, and the Moka coffee maker by David Chipperfield to the kettle and Plissé toaster in thermoplastic resin by Michele De Lucchi, the minimal folding steel trolley by Richard Sapper or the stylized flower vase by Zaha Hadid, always made of steel. For indoors and outdoors, the essential Catifa 46 chair by Arper, with wood shell, steel frame, leather or fabric upholstery in many colors, with four or three legs and also stool version. A cylindrical shape distinguishes the Mere armchair and the Ramsey chair by Bentley Home with briar covering of the structure, seat and back in leather. The crown of a large tree from which the light filters have inspired Mario Trimarchi for the sound-absorbing panels Botany similar to climbing branches. Minimal with the lightness of a paper sheet the panels Flat. Both by Caimi Brevetti. Cappellini’s furniture and objects have become icons and have influenced the design. Like Mendini's Geometric Proust, a symbol of postmodernism, the cozy Tulip armchair by Wanders, the stylized Tuta coat hanger and the minimal Drop bookcase by Nendo or the graphic Gong Circus coffee tables designed by Giulio Cappellini. By Living Divani, after Carbon Frog, reinterpretation in polyester and carbon fiber of the old straw armchair, the Sumo dormeuse by Piero Lissoni and the Lemni armchair by Marco Lavit, inserted in a circle, are destined to become classics. Two proposals by Patricia Urquiola for Cassina: the Gender armchair with an enveloping tubular structure made of iron and the very soft internal padding, with coordinated pouf, and the Back-Wing armchair, evolution of the same-named chair, with ergonomic backrest and folds on the sides that act as armrests.Among timeless pieces by Ceramica Flaminia, the Bonola washbasin by Jasper Morrison with a fluid shape and, almost in contrast, the monolithic Monoflag by Alessio Pinto. Masterpiece of technique, and more, the Cinelli's King Zydeco gravel, a tribute to Creole origins, to run on any terrain. With engine, integrated into the rear wheel hub, Zydeco Electric Mud. From the same world, the hyper-colored cap, Pink Anemone, design Fulvia Mendini, and Microrus by Elena Salmistraro. Core furnuture pieces by Boffi and De Padova: the Carlo ash table, the Salinas kitchen by Patricia Urquiola available in several colors and materials, the Sen poufs, seats and shelves, the Tsuki table lamp in glass or marble and for the bathroom the monobloc free-standing bathtub and R.I.G. (Rudimentary Interior Geometry) ingenious system for wall shelving. Desalto's design is characterized by the concept of subtraction. From two cones generating the Clay table to curves that modulate the seat of Softer Than Steel, to the full and empty games of tables Void series. Oriente Italiano, tableware and giftware porcelain by Ginori 1735, develops in ten different shades from the gillyflower pattern. Ethereal, absolute as an installation, yet capable of adapting to different environments, the ON AIR lift designed by Studio Marco Piva for IGV Group, with a cabin in Sicis Vetrite and stainless-steel profiles. Lava stone, extracted from the slopes of Mount Etna and treated with fire, becomes tiles and mosaics by Nerosicilia: the Gemme collection by Rodolfo Dordoni is embellished with glass castings, with Palazzo 700 glass serigraphs by Piero Lissoni, which evokes wooden floors of tradition. Designed in 1969 by Mario Bellini for Flos, the Chiara lamp continues to prevail in environments even when switched off. In 2020 a new floor stainless steel version and a smaller aluminum table version was born. Games of overlapping, sophisticated colors, discrete compositions that are transformed into domestic landscapes in Grafismi wallpaper, born from the meeting of Giulio Cappellini and Gabriella Fusillo, founder of Or.nami who produces them. Refinement of materials with past workmanship for a contemporary design in Porro furniture: from the re-edition of Materic table with steel base and ash top to the Romby armchair, virtuosity of cabinet-making, to Mikado, a reinterpretation of the sideboard, composed of wooden slats, which can be used as a room divider. Softness and comfort are strong points of the Larzia armchair and the Maryl sofa by Trussardi Home. In addition to these, again designed by Carlo Colombo, the SIT 414 armchair with steel frame, seat in fabric or leather, and the Monny coffee tables covered in leather with Carrara marble top. Pop and mythology, dear to maison Versace Casa, live on in the polyethylene Pop Medusa Chair with jellyfish decoration on the back and in the Bag Occasional Chair, the bean-bag with polystyrene balls. The legendary Minipipistrello by Gae Aulenti since 2018 is as a portable, cordless version, with rechargeable battery. Produced by Martinelli Luce, like L’amica, jointed and ductile, Biconica POL, a single element of polyethylene for indoor and outdoor use, and Elica with a rotating arm. Geberit, leader in the field of sanitary products, presents AquaClean Sela shower toilet with the Monolith sanitary module and AquaClean Mera with the technological Sigma50 actuator plate. Icone Luce, also at Supercampus, to better tell the evolution of design language, still offers Arbor, Giuup retro design, the minimal wall, table and suspension Lua, and Vera on wall. The suitcase becomes a design object and not only for details accuracy, the made in Italy workmanship, the materials. Baulificio Italiano Sorelle Roncato in Milan presents, in fact, alongside the trolley, increasingly light and functional, also the Baulebar or Baule Scrittoio, which would have been liked by the great travelers of the past. A perfect mix of comfort and aesthetics, the Archibald family by Poltrona Frau, designed by Jean-Marie Massaud in 2009, it’s enriched by the Gran Comfort model with removable cover, by the Dining Chair with four solid wood legs and the Stool, from 2021, with wooden base and metal stem. The Cesana design for Highlife shower enclosure is inspired by avant-garde architecture, for a careful study of spaces without sacrificing functionality. The Venere vases, created by Studiox for Gobbetto, fully enhance the characteristics of the material by proposing two pairs of objects in which the rigid and resistant Poliepo resin seems to become soft and floating. A gym for 25 exercises in less than two square meters. It’s Technogym Unica, a multifunctional bench made of high-quality materials, with a starting system that allows safe use to any user and access to a virtual trainer through a web app. In an overview with designers of the last twenty years, Istituto Marangoni Milano • The School of Design which has trained so many of them, could not be missing. Here the installation by Matteo Agati, designer and Alumnus of Istituto Marangoni. The work is a hexagonal structure with six wallpapers inside designed by students and videos on different monitors and the mirrored exterior to symbolize openness to the world of design and industry. ABCarbon marks the meeting of textile innovation with design. This fabric, at the exhibition, covers the S-Chair by Tom Dixon for Cappellini. It’s the result of seven years ABTechLab research, 100% carbon fiber, therefore resistant, light, fireproof, thermoregulator, antibacterial. And being the natural fiber, recyclable. Vanity Fair is also present. It is not a furniture or even design magazine, but as director Simone Marchetti wrote, it has become a network, a platform, a connections system, which aggregates and updates, reflects and illustrates the changes in contemporary life and sometimes even anticipates them.
