A historic, green, residential, student and professional district of Milan. On the outskirts, but not too much. Enclosed between Navigli, with parks and gardens, served by subway, cycle paths and highways just a step away. Over recent years it is being revitalized with iconic buildings designed by great architectural firms. Milan beyond the circle of bastions. Little has been said about it so far, more and more it will be spoken about in months and years to come. Any contemporary metropolis knows that the city centre is its calling card, but to ensure life quality and services available to the whole population and those who enter the city for business or pleasure, the city's "belt" role is fundamental. It’s like heart and its arteries.
Suburban areas represent large lab from which the freest and most avant-garde trends emerge: "Periphery is a factory of ideas, the city of the future." Renzo Piano explained. Superstudio Maxi, the third and largest space of Superstudio Group, the result of a particularly accurate urban regeneration project, is located right here, in Milan, bordering between center and outskirts, one minute from Famagosta Metro station.
And waiting to enter the new venue, let's go find out the architectural heritage already present in the surrounding area. Starting from the building known as Savoia Assicurazioni which dominates Viale Famagosta, designed by Giò Ponti in the 50s and characterized by distinctive green ceramic tiles with diamond surface, used by the master in several works. The complex is now the subject of a complete renovation by Il Prisma architectural studio with San Vigilio 1 business-park project. Buildings, originally separated, have been integrated together and one of them glass-covered will allow you to admire the work by Giò Ponti closely as never before.
On the north side, Parallel Building, an extremely innovative work by Mario Cucinella, which, like all architectures that get themselves talked about, has also earned the “horizontal skyscraper” nickname. An overhead and unexpected building, a floating ship between earth and sky which thanks to this new structure makes the most of solar energy.
Just a few hundred metres away, we discover Iulm headquarter (Free University of Languages and Communication) and we can only mention the description made by Gianluca Peluffo studio which together with 5+1AA Alfonso Femia, Alessandro Schiesaro, I Quadro Ingegneria, Deerns Italia, dealt with the project:
“A suburb that has almost become city centre. A building that is not randomly placed within a plot, as in all modernity, but that builds full and empty in the same way. A building that appears to be mimetic with respect to its surroundings. Bricks, visible concrete, glass, plasterwork. Then, inside, an explosion of emerald green ceramic. Like a traffic light in the fog."
And the CMR Project The Sign complex is in the pipeline, and always very close. A great example of urban regeneration, which includes a green area opened to the neighborhood, a pervious image, made up of scans between full and empty of golden colors to vibrate with light.
We would like to end by returning to a great protagonist: Vico Magistretti. Not everyone knows that Famagosta’s ATM tram depot, marked by elements that strongly evoke the factory appearance such as the sequence of sheds, visible bricks, beams, is his work and unmistakable landmark of this urban landscape that is effectivey city.
