THURSDAY'S INTERVIEW

FABIO NOVEMBRE. GUESS WHAT DOESN'T EXIST

Posted by: Gisella Borioli

He is the architect and designer who invented the most iconic and spectacular furniture of recent years, becoming the leader of that eclecticism and that "different" vision that brought design to the border with art. Right from the first exhibitions dedicated to Design, Fabio Novembre arrived at Superstudio with his incredible furnishings within the events curated by Giulio Cappellini. In these twenty years his fame has grown along with his influence in international design, but he always remains the visionary designer who seeks other horizons.

2000/2020 in twenty years what has changed, what will change?
I have always felt represented by Lavoisier's aphorism: "Nothing is created, nothing is destroyed, everything is transformed." And if the father of modern chemistry said so, I don't think there is anything to object to.

2000/2020 in twenty years what has changed, what will change?
I have always felt represented by Lavoisier's aphorism: "Nothing is created, nothing is destroyed, everything is transformed." And if the father of modern chemistry said so, I don't think there is anything to object to.

The hallmark, the fil rouge of your work?
Distinctiveness implies uniqueness, and we often forget that we are absolutely unique. Gathering in packs, forming currents or fashions, is a human behavior that I have never accepted. I try to explore unknown territories, to imagine what is not yet there. Aware that everything I do is aimed at creating bonds and connections, with falling in love as the main goal.

With which adjectives would you define the trends of contemporary design?
Today, design has little contemporary. The tendency to look back, to pursue reassuring atmospheres of the past is a fact to confront. There is a technological acceleration that we try to balance with an aesthetic ebb that renounces any experimentation. With a few exceptions, it is hard to shape our time.

Let's consider your experience at Superstudio. In what year, what and how did you submit your proposal?
The year was 2001 and that wonderful talent-scout,  Giulio Cappellini,  decided to present my crazy ORG table: a crystal organism with 171 colored legs that roamed free in the spaces of imagination.

How important was the mise-en-scène?
Giulio Cappellini has always been a mise-en-scène master. New Cappellini collections presentation were  unmissable appointments of the Salone del Mobile.

A fun fact, a meeting, a memory of that experience?
The table has 171 legs/ropes of which only 4 are load-bearing, perfectly camouflaged, which I had positioned more inside than the perimeter. It then happened that people touched the outer perimeter and were amazed by the soft texture of the hanging ropes. There was even a surreal hypothesis that legs were not load-bearing, but in consideration of the high number they still had the ability to support the heavy crystal top. When you say: "unity is strength" ...

What must  an exhibition “fair" have, besides the product, to be attractive and convincing?
People still pretend not to understand that smoke always comes to senses before the roast. In addition to the quality of the product, which should be taken for granted, adequate communication of the event is needed to make it even more desirable. Then, underway, it also takes a dose of glamour that the world of design struggles to express, and which it would do well to borrow from the nearby fashion world.

If you had to mention three design icons of the last twenty years?
I just list my personal maximum: Org, Cappellini, 2001, Nemo, Driade, 2010, Lantern, Kartell, 2017

What does the Milan Fuorisalone represent to you?
A wonderful insight.

A project of yours for tomorrow?
Pablo Picasso, absolute genius, used to say: “I do not seek. I find”, and I embrace this philosophy. We always try to make plans bigger than ourselves trying to interpret any event according to future developments. However the truth is that we should try to live more intensely every day, sometimes sacrificing strategy in favor of tactics.
