DUBAI VIEW: THE DISTRICT OF DESIGN

There is more than one analogy between the birth of the d3, the design district in Dubai and the Tortona Fashion and Design District. The two most innovative districts of the two capitals of creativity were created many years apart, thanks to the enlightenment and the passion of the first pioneers and investors, accomplishing in each metropolis effervescent and progressive urban hubs having an influence on the development of the two cities. As Superstudio has been able to start off the transformation of a suburban district of abandoned factories in the beating heart Milan, Tecom, headed by Amina Al Rustamani aimed for the rebirth and metamorphosis of a Dubai district dedicating it entirely to design, fashion and creativity. Strong development of all activities also thanks to the growing number of creatives of the region as well as international. Close by to the enormous Dubai Mall and to the iconic Burj Khalifa, overlooking the canal that passes through the city, the d3 is a very modern district and with one of a kind consistency. The buildings, new shops, open-air exhibitions, concept-restaurants, top brands showrooms, young local creative’s galleries, artists and designers’ urban furniture, temporary events, fashion and design Fairs, refer back to an innovative and international vision creating a lure destination. As Mohammad Saeed Al Shehhi explains, COO of d3 “d3 began as a vision and is now blossom in a new unique design community inside the United Arab Emirates. Our ambition was to be the pioneers of a place there passion and aim combined to connect every field of design and guide protagonists of the region towards the growth of a project made in UAE. We want to inspire, welcome and support every creative entity of our community, as operators, visitors and tourists”. The second phase of s3 that will develop in an area opf about 100.000 sq.mt, is entrusted to the architects Foster+Partners; a Creative Community with flexible spaces with an industrial and urban look reserved to artists and creative-thinkers. Here is also where the Design Institute for Design and Innovation (DIDI) will be born, the first university in Dubai that gives a design degree and cultural epicentre that supports young talents. It will be ready in 2019.
